Vintage Huichol Beaded and Horned Mexican Full Face Wooden Devil Mask

A vintage Huichol wooden Mexican Devil mask. The outside is fully beaded in numerous colors. Horn on the forehead are real possibly goat. Measures 9” long, 7” wide and 5” deep. Great condition, beads appear all intact; see photos.

are known for their colorful bead and yarn works. Historically, shamans created these objects to reflect their spiritual relationships with ancestors and nature deities. They are also made as offerings to their gods
Clowns in Mexico are often seen wearing devil masks. These characters are treated as comic figures. They show up during Carnival or to honor local patron saints. The missionaries had ordered their new converts to abandon the ancient gods, calling them demons. The people found that by putting horns on the masks of their gods they could get around this order. Today many of the contemporary masks worn by el diablo (the devil) retain some of the features of the ancient gods.
